US major airline mainline domestic passenger capacity grew less than 1% last year as all but one of the big six network carriers reduced domestic mainline capacity (see table). Continental was the only exception. Domestic capacity growth was driven by low-cost carriers as AirTran grew ASMs 19.4%, JetBlue 11.6% and Southwest Airlines 7.5%. The network airlines, meanwhile, turned their attention to international growth, led by Delta Air Lines, which boosted ASMs 14.6%, followed by Continental, up 6.8%, and US Airways, up 6.1%.
