US airlines warned early last month of rising fuel costs and a slowing US economy (see Cover Story, p. 24). Continental Airlines lowered its capacity growth estimate for full-year 2008 to 2%-3% from previous guidance of 3%-4% and said mainline domestic capacity will be slightly down for the year. Southwest Airlines said it plans to reduce its 2008 fleet growth from 10 to five aircraft and grow ASMs 4%-5% this year. …
