US airlines feel heat on environment.(Brief article)

Aircraft emissions at last are in the spotlight in the US. In early December, five states, the District of Columbia and the City of New York jointly petitioned the US Environmental Protection Agency to regulate commercial aircraft emissions. Days later, a Senate committee approved a bill that would establish a carbon emissions cap-and-trade program from 2012 governing a wide range of industries, including airlines, sending the proposed legislation to the Senate floor for a vote by the full chamber.

"Aviation is a large and rapidly growing source of greenhouse gases and the EPA should have taken action by now to curb these emissions," California Attorney General Jerry Brown said. …
