RIYADH--The jointly owned U.S.-Saudi maintenance base at the capital city's King Khaled International Airport is in full operation and had performed D checks on six Saudia Boeing 737s and three L-1011s by spring. Alsalam Aircraft Co., visited by ATW when it was preparing to receive its first aircraft (ATW, 6/93), has been designated to play an increasingly important role, the national airline having decided to have all heavy maintenance done in the country. Previously, lack of capacity at Saudia's technical base at Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport meant that some D checks had to be contracted abroad. But with Alsalam's three hangar bays, fully equipped shops and a skilled work force--including many who worked in the Jeddah base previously--all heavy maintenance work can and will be performed in the country, Adnan Dabbagh, the airline's executive VP-operations and chairman of Alsalam, told ATW. …
