Airlines share 'peace dividend'. (benefits of Middle East peace process)

AMMAN--The Middle East peace process is beginning to have positive effects on air transport in the region. One effect noticed by delegates to the 28th AGM of the Arab Air Carriers Orgn. (AACO), who flew here on host carrier Royal Jordanian Airlines, was that their aircraft passed over Israel instead of circumventing it, reducing journey time by about 30 min. "The peace process should be a welcome development which could very. well modify. the future shape of regional Arab aviation," IATA Director General Pierre Jeanniot said, adding that part of the "peace dividend" could be "better, cheaper, safer and more direct regional air navigation." He noted that the U.S. Trade and Development Agency has commissioned a study on improvements in the efficiency of airspace use in the entire region. …
