ZURICH--With 13,000 employees and 67 kitchen facilities worldwide, Gate Gourmet is one of the truly global players in the catering market. The Swissair subsidiary did an estimated $1.13 billion in business in 1994. Since its formation in 1992, Gate Gourmet has expanded continually, its latest acquisition being SAS Service Partner, one of Europe's giants, last year.

Two years earlier, it had entered the Scandinavian market by taking an 80% interest in Aero-Chef, which has flight kitchens in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden as well as Lithuania and Portugal. But the SAS subsidiary had activities stretching well beyond Scandinavia. In fact, it had flight kitchens at 33 airports throughout Europe and in Asia, a work force of 6,500 and an annual turnover of some $600 million. It was particularly active in Germany and at London Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
