U.S., Canada get closer. (sign bilateral air-services agreement)(In Detail)

The new U.S.-Canada bilateral air-services agreement is expected to boost transborder traffic significantly, because although the two countries are each other's largest trading partners, air service between them was restricted greatly under the 1966 bilateral. Traffic growth has averaged less than 4% annually since 1978.

The new agreement is expected to lead to a 50% increase in traffic by the year 2000. In spite of the restrictive bilateral, however, the U,S. and Canada share the largest bilateral aviation market in the world. In 1993, 13 million passengers traveled between the two countries, according to DOT.
