Jetstream/Avro, ATR agree to join. (European regional airline consortium)

After months of intense negotiations, British Aerospace, Aerospatiale of France and Alenia of Italy, tentatively have agreed to form a European regional-aircraft consortium in an effort to compete better globally.

The joint venture will involve BAe's Jetstream--maker of turboprop equipment--and Avro--its regional-jet manufacturer--and ATR, the Aerospatiale/Alenia consortium that makes the turboprop ATR 42 and 72, and will be owned equally by the three parties.

Sources close to the negotiations say at least six months will be required for the parties to obtain regulatory approval. After that, the joint venture will commence operations by merging marketing, sales and customer support activities of ATR, Avro and Jetstream into a single unit. …
