IATA says 2006 safest year for airlines.(News Briefs)(International Air Transport Association)(Brief article)

Last year was the "safest year on record" for commercial air transport, according to IATA, although it criticized Russia, the CIS states and Africa for accident rates far exceeding the world average.

The association reported that the 2006 industry hull loss rate was 0.65 accidents per million flights for Western-built jets, or one for every 1.5 million flights, a 14% improvement over 2005. IATA airlines had a hull loss rate of 0.48 accidents per million flights, or one for every 2 million flights. …
