LONDON--For a long time, the boast at Heathrow has been that it is the busiest international airport in the world. But its operator, HAL (Heathrow Airport Ltd., subsidiary of BAA) is becoming increasingly worried that it may lose this status to competitors on mainland Europe, notably Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol, Frankfurt and Brussels, each of which is undergoing major expansion.

Aeroports de Paris, operator of Charles de Gaulle, which was connected to the highspeed rail system recently, boasts of its objective to turn the airport into the leading European gateway by the turn of the century (ATW, 9/94).

Heathrow hit what had been considered its saturation point last year, with 50 milhon passengers through its four terminals. …
