Our Market Development Award winner is no newcomer to the airline scene.

British Midland Airways traces its lineage back to 1938, from which it has grown consistently in passengers carried, revenues earned and routes operated. Today, it is Britain's second-largest scheduledservice carrier after British Airways, with 1,000 flights a week at London Heathrow airport. BMA carries as many passengers on its European services as some national flag carriers of the EU member states.

Since its inception, British Midland has been noted for its competitive element. It developed a strong challenge on the British trunk routes, up against BA, but its most significant expansion--and the reason for our award--has come about over the past five years, during which it has been transformed into a truly European airline, seizing the opportunities offered by the EU's three packages of aviation liberalization more than any other operator. …
