Airline of the Year: Lufthansa. (Company Profile)

Air Transport World's annual achievement awards program was begun by the editorial staff in 1974, to help bring recognition of excellence in the airline industry. All awards result from nominations made by the staff and from people associated with the industry. Final selections are made by the ATW editors

Airline of the Year is our highest honor for a major international carrier. It goes to one that has demonstrated overall excellence in most of the key disciplines. Most of the time, its recipient has won some of our other awards in previous years.

Our honors for 1994 go to Lufthansa German Airlines. It also has won before, back in 1982, as well as some of our other awards, including Technology Management.

This time, we honor Lufthansa more for its ability to change course and to restructure itself to be stronger in the changing environment than for its abilities in the more traditional measures of excellence.

The whole world seems to have changed since 1982. The 1990s have been especially tough on the industry. Airlines have struggled with the globalization of world economies and the increasing intensity of competition in the marketplace. …
