Speed and safety are the airline industry's coins of value, each a mutually dependent value that is worthless without the other. This is why the industry is so meticulous in its observance of safety protocols and so defensive of its record.

This protective posture is a reflex response created by years of experience with an exaggerated public reaction to real or even rumored tears in the safety fabric.

Forty years ago, accidents had an immediate impact--a sharp dropoff in air travel. Lately, however, excessive public fear manifests itself in longer-lasting forms--legislated safety solutions.
