Pondering the impending merger of US Airways Group and America West Airlines last year in these pages, ATW asked: Can a tugboat keep the Titanic afloat? The answer 12 months later appears to be yes. The merger, which took place in conjunction with US Airways' exit from bankruptcy last September, was funded by $867 million in equity from a number of investors including Air Canada parent ACE Aviation Holdings plus $830 million in new borrowing (ATW, 5/06, p. 32).

The resulting airline is the sixth-largest in the US in terms of revenue, with $10.33 billion for 2005. It serves more than 230 destinations in North America, Europe and the Caribbean/Mexico with a workforce of nearly 35,000. …
