"Big Brown" announced in May that it is pouring more than $1 billion into expanding its air hub at Louisville International, the global headquarters of its express package delivery airline operations. The upgrade, to be completed by 2010, will increase sorting capacity at its high-tech Worldport facility by 60% to 487,000 packages per hr. and include construction of new ramp space to accommodate A380s and 747-400s. UPS ordered eight 747-400Fs last year with the first delivery scheduled for June 2007. The August order was the first it had placed directly with Boeing for any 747 variant and followed on the heels of one for 10 A380Fs plus 10 options.

The company is anticipating "strong growth in global trade to continue for years to come," according to Chairman and CEO Mike Eskew. …
