American Airlines parent AMR Corp. reported an operating profit excluding special items of $100 million last year compared to an operating loss of $133 million in 2004, representing the strongest improvement among its peer group and its first annual operating profit since 2000 (excluding special items). But it continued to spill red ink on the bottom line, losing $861 million--$681 million excluding special items--compared to a loss of $761 million in 2004 or $896 million excluding special items.

Progress continued in the first quarter of 2006 as AMR trimmed its net loss to $92 million from a deficit of $162 million last year while operating profit more than quadrupled to $115 million from $23 million. …
