Amid all the excitement generated by Gol, it is easy to miss the fact that Brazil's largest domestic airline, with an estimated 45% market share, is TAM, which carried 20 million passengers last year on more than 600 daily flights. Net income for the year under US GAAP was virtually flat at R$427 million ($182 million) on a 25% lift in net revenue to R$5.6 billion. It raised R$1.5 billion in an IPO that closed in April. It operates a fleet of 84 aircraft comprising A319s/A320s, A330s and F100s, with 11 more A320s set to arrive through 2009 out of an order for 29.

TAM said it is aiming "at selective expansion in the international market," where it had an estimated 25.3% share of RPKs in the first quarter of 2006 and served 11 international cities directly. …
