The Brazilian LCC continued to add aircraft and expand its network while enjoying soaring profits. Net earnings reached R$513.2 million ($236 million) for 2005, a 33.4% increase over 2004, and the first quarter of 2006 produced its best-ever quarterly profit of R$179.9 million.

Gol took delivery of seven 737-800s in the first half of 2006 and dash 800 deliveries are slated to continue through 2012. Set to benefit from expected downsizing at Varig, the carrier announced in May it will take delivery of an additional two 737-700s this year that should bring its year-end fleet to 62, followed by an additional eight in 2007 along with two dash 300s. It plans to increase capacity by 45% this year and its expanding network now includes destinations in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay as well as extensive domestic service in Brazil, where its 26% market share trails only TAM. …
