The Colombian airline is now 18 months removed from a 21-month bankruptcy reorganization process. Brazil's Synergy/OceanAir Group, which owns a 75% stake in Avianca, has nearly completed a $63 million recapitalization that it hopes has the carrier on its way to financial viability.

The biggest development in 2006 is the $3 million modernization of the airline's Puente Aereo Terminal in Bogota. President Fabio Villegas Ramirez said the renovated terminal will comply "with service standards set forth by IATA" and is a "decisive step to offer travelers fast, comfortable service, as the new infrastructure will allow for efficient connections and reduction of time in traveling procedures to a minimum. …
