Bratislava-based SkyEurope pursued its neck-and-neck race with archrival Wizz Air to become the largest Central and Eastern Europe-based LCC and last year embarked 1.85 million passengers, a 94% increase over 2004. Its current summer schedule covers 70 routes to 37 destinations in 19 European countries. It operates from five bases, four of which are outside Slovakia--Budapest, Warsaw, Krakow and Prague. Its Prague base was opened in April.

To support its expansion financially, SkyEurope Holding conducted an IPO last fall and its shares began trading on the Vienna and Warsaw exchanges on Sept. 27. Total proceeds were [euro]78 million of which [euro]60 million went to the company. …
