The Singapore-based Qantas offshoot acquired struggling Valuair in 2005 but appears to be lagging behind local rival Tiger Airways in the race to lay claim to the title of Singapore's leading LCC. Obtaining new route rights has been a major challenge for Jetstar Asia, which started services in December 2004 with four 180-seat A320s serving Hong Kong, Taipei and Pattaya (the last has been dropped).
