Acquisition of Japan Air System gave Japan Airlines long-sought parity with ANA in the domestic market, and the expectation was that the combination of strong domestic and international networks would provide JAL with much-needed balance and reduce its vulnerability to outside events (ATW, 4/04, p. 40). Unfortunately, a series of self-inflicted blows have damaged its reputation domestically, while anti-Japan demonstrations in China took a bite out of international revenues.
