Even as the carrier rolls out a new image and identity, the Indian government is talking up a merger with Air India and an IPO to help enable the struggling state-owned airlines to compete with a host of startups. According to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, Indian and Air India will be merged within a year, creating an entity that operates 125-130 aircraft by the end of April 2007. At the same time, the government reportedly intends to sell off 20%-25% of the combined carrier to fund fleet renewal, which is well underway with Indian recently finalizing an order for 43 A320s. …
