ATW's 2006 Airline of the Year emphatically stamped itself as one the world's strongest performers with a profit of HK$3.47 billion ($446.9 million) in 2005 despite a 38% rise in fuel prices. While this was down 23.2%, underlying fundamentals improved. Turnover climbed 19% to a record HK$50.91 billion and passengers grew 13% to 15.4 million. Cost per ATK excluding fuel decreased 2% while average aircraft utilization increased 5% to 12.6 hr.

The strong result underpinned Cathay's record order placed last December for up to 36 777- 300ERs to be delivered between 2007 and 2010 as well as up to a dozen 747-400BCFs. By September when it celebrates its 60th anniversary, the fleet will total 101 widebodies. …
