The longest-running commercial aircraft evaluation came to an end early in 2006 when Air India formally signed up for a fleet overhaul program based on 787s and 777s. The 68-airplane commitment also signals an end to years of interference and indecision by the Indian government. Deliveries will commence in November and the aircraft will open up new nonstop routes such as Delhi-New York and Mumbai-San Francisco.

The government also is looking to fast-track the proposed merger of Air India and Indian Airlines. According to Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel, the merger would be concluded in the 2006-07 year with an IPO to follow. …
