Accepting an invitation to join the oneworld alliance and taking delivery of new A320s/A321s to replace aging A310s and A320s were the major developments for the Amman-based carrier in the past year. But don't let the impending entry into oneworld be misleading; Royal Jordanian is clearly focused on operations in the Middle East region (ATW, 1/06, p. 50). To that end, in March it placed a firm order for seven Embraer 195s with deliveries beginning later this year, saying the order fits its strategy to develop Amman as a regional hub. In fact, it is RJ's regional emphasis, and its understanding that ambitious long-haul expansion is best left to other airlines in the Middle East, that appears to have swayed oneworld to an extend an invitation. …
