The UAE-owned carrier, which launched in 2003, expects to operate 35 widebodies to 70 destinations by 2010. In May it took delivery of its fifth 777-300ER and expects a major jump in passenger traffic this year. It flew 950,000 passengers in 2005, but with new aircraft and an expanding network anticipates carrying 2.5 million in 2006. Financial results are not shared outside the airline so determining how it is performing is difficult. CEO Robert Strodel stepped down in May and a search for a new CEO was underway at this writing. No explanation was supplied for Strodel's departure.

By year end Etihad will serve 34 markets, with flights to Doha, Kuwait and destinations in the Far East slated to be launched in the second half of 2006. …
