The European Commission will launch an in-depth probe into Alitalia's restructuring plan, Commissioner for Transport Jacques Barrot confirmed last month.

He stated that there are no "negative presumptions" that the restructuring plan contains illegal state aid. "There is simply a desire for a maximum legal certainty," he said, adding that the investigation also is important to avoid future complaints from rival airlines.

Italian Transport Minister Pietro Lunardi said the Commission is seeking answers to 23 questions. Earlier reports indicated it wants to know more about Alitalia's planned recap as well as further details of its plan to sell 45% of its split-off services division to state holding company Fintecna. …
