Lufthansa's vaunted U.S. ab initio training academy at Goodyear, Ariz., which has helped to produce more than 4,000 line pilots for the German flag carrier and other airlines such as Air France, Iberia, All Nippon and EVA over the past 22 years, this month opens its doors to "any qualified candidate who wishes to become a commercial pilot" or earn an advanced rating.

The newly formed Airline Training Center Arizona, Inc. (ATCA) subsidiary received FAA certification as an FAR 141 flight school in August, just six weeks after filing its application. Its first open-enrollment ground and flight classes are to convene Nov. 2.

Lufthansa bought the facility in March for $12 million from PSA successor PS Group, which had been operating the training program under contract since 1967, first in San Diego and since 1970, at Goodyear, and which boasted a 97% graduation rate for Lufthansa and client airline students. …
