United seeks extra $725 million from labor.(bankruptcy reorganization)(Brief Article)

Bankrupt United Airlines is seeking $725 million in additional savings from its employees above and beyond the $2.56 billion achieved in May 2003. This new target does not include any savings associated with its previously announced decision to seek permission to terminate and replace its existing pension plans. It is part of UAL's ambitious goal to cut total expenses by a further $2 billion.

Of the new savings, $112 million will come from salaried and management employees with the remaining $613 million from its unionized work groups. …
