ILA '92: flying A340. (1992 Internationale Luft-und-Raumfahrtausstellung air show; Airbus A340)

BERLIN--Partnerships, future and present, were big talking points at the new Internationale Luft-und Raumfahrtausstellung--ILA '92--at Schonefeld, the former Soviet sector airfield here, involving the European Regioliner and behind the scenes, the partners in a second-generation SST.

On the latter point, the partners, notably the U.S., U.K. and France, met at senior-management level to review the year of collaboration.

Any new SST will contain a large proportion of Airbus Industrie advanced technology and the here and now of that was displayed by the A340, which flew on the first two days before returning to Toulouse to resume the flight-test program.

The A340 carried out some impressive slow fly-bys but its star-of-the-show status was usurped by a MiG-29UB that, surprisingly, in view of German edginess over air-show aerobatics following the Ramstein disaster, staged a series of maneuvers, including the cobra, which for once justified the use of the air-show commentators' over-worked adjective: "Thrilling. …
