It is known as the Imperial War Museum Duxford, but the name doesnt hint at the number of meaningful civil airliners exhibited at this wonderful facility in the rolling green hills northeast of London. While its collection of postWorld War II UK airliners is not complete, there are sufficient numbers and variety to make a visit well worthwhile.

And there are military aircraft galore--some unique--that make a complete day of a visit. The newest facility to open at Duxford is the American Air Museum, which manages to cram an amazing number of significant US military aircraft under one roof, many hanging from that roof.

Duxford, a historic airport that traces its aviation heritage back to 1917 when it was established as a Royal Flying Corps training site, has two advantages over many other world-class aviation museums. …
