Air New Zealand's hopes of rescuing its proposed alliance with Qantas in its present form were killed off after the New Zealand High Court in late Sept. rejected an appeal by the two carriers to overrule the NZ Commerce Commission's earlier veto of the agreement. While the Australian Competition Tribunal ultimately approved the tie-up on appeal on Oct. 12, 13 months after the country's Competition and Consumer Commission vetoed the plan, the outcome was academic as the airlines required permission in both countries for the alliance to proceed. …
