Cathay Pacific Airways' first-half profits soared to HK$1.77 billion ($227 million) from a loss of HK$1.24 billion in the first half of 2003. Turnover leapt 48.1% to HK$18.19 billion, more than offsetting a 22.4% rise in operating expenses to HK$15.96 billion, largely attributable to soaring fuel prices.
