Subtitled The Illustrated Memoirs of an Airline Pilot, this is an unusual book. In addition to having captained a variety of transport types ranging from the DC-3 to the L-1011, Whitlock achieved success as a comic-strip artist. The numerous detailed drawings that accompany the text add greatly to the value of his account of a flying career spanning four decades.

He recounts with an excellent sense of humor and remarkable frankness his many escapades on the ground and in the air while working for Indian charter operator Indamer and two British Airlines, BKS and British Airways. And frankness abounds in his description of the haphazard way air-transport operations were conducted in Europe, Asia and Africa during his early years in the cockpit. …
