Virtually every island in the Caribbean has a motto, most extolling their history with flowery prose. Aruba, formerly of the Netherlands Antilles, is a bit less pompous. Its motto is simply "One Happy Island."

How can anyone looking for a glorious vacation turn down such a motto? Not many do, evidently--a fact that has proved to be a boon to the island and its airline.

Air Aruba was established by the government in September, 1986. Its founding was attributed to an event that occurred the previous year--the huge Lago oil refinery on the southeastern tip of Aruba was shut down. At the time, the refinery was the No. 1 source of income for the island.
