It came into the airline industry through the manufacturers, who started down the partnership road with their suppliers in small steps. The big steps came with the launching of major new programs, as Joan Feldman discussed in ATW 12 months ago.

Now, the movement has made it to the airline industry. Some are doing it and some are sticking to the old ways (see Perry Flint's article on page 22).

Carriers hesitate at their own risk. Airlines in the van of this movement are doing business with far fewer vendors, promising long-term business and a marriage of purpose in exchange for increased attention and cost controls from the vendor.

In a cynical world where abuse of language has stripped words of their weight, the word "partnership" along says little that hasn't been promised before. …
