The Washington Dulles-based airline is undergoing a transformation from a Regional into a low-fare carrier, the first in the US to do so. ACA's contract with financially beleaguered United Airlines accounted for 85% of its revenues and a separate accord with Delta for 15%. Those agreements have been terminated to make way for Independence Air, which began flying in June and plans to operate 86 CRJ200s currently in the ACA fleet and 27 new A320s, the first arriving in November.

Last fall ACA successfully fought off a hostile takeover by Mesa Air Group, which sought to acquire it and maintain its contract with United. …
