Boosted by a $38.1 million pre-tax gain from federal security rebates, AirTran posted net income of more than $100 million for 2003, a dramatic improvement from net income of not quite $11 million in the prior year. Excluding one-time items, net income amounted to $59.6 million. The momentum carried into the 2004 first quarter as the airline doubled its net to $4.1 million from $2 million in the year-ago period.

Last year it placed an order for 100 CFM56-7B-powered 737-700s and dash 800s, of which 50 are firm and 50 are options.

At the same lime it ordered 10 additional 717s. …
