Cargo tonnages, up some 15.38% in 2003, fell by almost 20% in the 2004 first quarter. However, this decline reflects a changing approach by the airline, which sees further growth coming from general freight rather than its former speciality of outsize cargo. While 2003 brought it considerable business in supporting military operations in the obvious areas, this is not a reliable source of revenue. The Western Europe-Russia-China routes offer strong potential and early this year VDA finished setting up a subsidiary called Air Bridge Cargo, now operating the first Russian 747s, a pair of 747-200s, on these routes. …
