As it prepared for the launch of its first transborder services beginning this fall, Calgary-based WestJet continued its march across Canada and into high-yield eastern business markets formerly dominated by Air Canada. As of April, WestJet was operating 64 weekly flights between Ottawa and Toronto and 78 weekly flights between Toronto and Montreal. The rapid buildup is possible because the airline is adding 11 new 737-700s this year with seven 737-700s and five 737-800s set to arrive in 2005.

WestJet's profitability streak almost came to an end in the first quarter, but it eked out a C$512,000 profit, its 29th consecutive profitable quarter. Net earnings for 2003 rose 16. …
