For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2003, ATW's 2004 Airline of the Year posted a net profit of A$343.5 million ($239 million), a very strong performance in light of the terrorist bombings in Bali, SAPS and the Iraq war.

After launching in 2002 a low-cost international carrier, Australian Airlines, Qantas last year launched Jetstar, an LCC to take on Virgin Blue. It ordered 23 A320s for Jetstar with the first deliveries in June. The LCC started flying in May using 14 717s that formerly were with Regional subsidiary QantasLink. This year Qantas teamed with Singapore Airlines owner Temasek Holdings and two Singaporean businessmen to launch Jetstar Asia, which will be based in Singapore, Qantas's largest hub. …
