Passenger increases in the double digits year-on-year marked the first three months of 2004, in part related to a 16.7% jump in capacity including additional services to Shanghai, Hangzhou, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Phuket and Kota Kinabalu. Cargo was the highlight, with volume up 24.2% to 70,014 tonnes in the quarter.

Dragonair ended 2003 in the black despite SARS thanks to cargo, which grew 40% while passenger numbers slumped more than 10%. Building on the cargo boom, the airline is investing $300 million for five 747-400s from Singapore Airlines to launch cargo flights to the US in 2006. …
