A profit of any sort for the year ended Dec. 31 is a surprise given that the carrier was devastated by SARS, but a profit is what it reported. It was helped considerably by its cargo/passenger mix, with cargo accounting for 46% of total revenues.

For 2004 China Airlines is forecasting a NT$3.1 billion ($923 million) net profit and the year started well with a profit of NT$750 million in the first quarter, well up on last year's NT$460 million. …
