Swiss International Air Lines on June 3 said it is abandoning plans to enter the oneworld alliance and terminating a commercial tie with British Airways after the carriers failed to reach agreement on how to integrate their frequent-flier programs. They had been at odds since Swiss became reluctant to hand over details of its frequent fliers, including key business travelers, to BA. "The sizeable costs of such an integration and the drawbacks it would bring currently outweigh its projected mid- to long-term benefits," the airline said in a statement.

The carrier's apparent change of attitude coincided with the appointment of former Lufthansa manager Christoph Franz as its new CEO, which also fueled speculation that Swiss might opt for the Star Alliance instead of oneworld. …
