ATW Industry Awards through the years: it was a January luncheon in New York City, a rather small, intimate affair, that gave birth to the Air Transport World Industry Awards program.(Industry Awards '75-'04)

During that luncheon, ATW founder, publisher and editor Joe Murphy handed out 10 awards to airline executives from around the world. The Airline of the Year for 1974 was United Airlines.

From the start, the ATW Awards program had credibility in the airline world. United President Edward E. Carlson attended that first luncheon to accept the award personally. The magazine didn't make a big fuss over the event, its acknowledgment limited to two photos of the winners and their names in the caption.

Since that modest beginning, the ATW Awards have become recognized as an informed and highly credible tribute to excellence in the airline industry, year after year attracting leading managers from around the world to accept their airlines' honors at presentation ceremonies that now take place at gala dinners in Washington and Singapore in alternate years.
