Pan Am: 1927-1991. (Pan American World Airways Inc.)

When Pan American World Airways ceased operations last Dec. 4, the airline industry lost one of its great pioneer institutions. Pan Am, especially in the early years, was almost synonymous with international air transport, especially long-haul, ocean-hopping airline service. In those days, nearly everywhere that Pan Am began service, it was a first.

The photos on these pages are aimed to show some of the highfights of a great history. The airline began operations with its first airmail contract in 1927, between the Florida Keys and Havana. As it received longer-haul equipment such as the Sikorsky S-38 and Fokker F-VII, it began Miami-Havana operations from its first 36th Street headquarters in Miami, opposite page, top left. …
