To find a leader who better reflects the dynamism of today's airline industry than Robert L. Crandall, chairman and CEO of AMR Corp., parent of American Airlines, would be difficult. Since becoming president of the airline in 1980, he has shown a single-minded determination to make it the strongest and best-run airline in the world. And in the eyes of many, he has succeeded.

Along the way, he has been a tireless advocate of American Airlines' own interests and by and large, the interests of a deregulated airline industry. Known neither for subtlety nor for pulling punches, Crandall's methods have won few friends.
