Airline technology achievement award: CFM International. (18th Annual Air Transport World Awards)

CFM International, a fabulously successful jointly owned international company with one fabulously successful product, wins the 1991 Airline Technology Achievement Award for its CFM56 family of power plants. The CFM56 brought to the airline industry the quiet, efficiency and economy of high bypass technology to the middle-thrust ranges, capturing the majority of its markets.

Throughout the 1970s, a gap existed in the range of thrust needs that the engine manufacturers could satisfy. The narrow-bodies of the era were well-served by the low-bypass Pratt & Whitney JT8D and the RollsRoyce Spey, while the widebodies were using the trio of high-bypass engines from Rolls, Pratt and General Electric working with SNECMA in a coproduction agreement. …
