Neglect in Nepal. (modernization is on hold for Royal Nepal Airlines)

KATMANDU-A badly needed modernization program for Royal Nepal Airlines is still awaiting approval by the Nepalese government. When ATW last visited the government-owned airline (ATW, 3/90) there was hope for the construction of a new technical base and replacement of the 727-100s and Bae 748s would be given the green fight during that year.

But the landlocked mountainous kingdom went through a period of political turmoil, with a new government seemingly indifferent to the needs of the airline. And as 1992 dawns, it appears unlikely that decisions are in the near-term.

Under these difficult conditions, the management deserves credit for the fact that the airline operates efficiently and profitably-it has been in the black for 17 years. …
